CORTEN COURTYARD ADU

Ann Arbor, MI (Unbuilt, 2020)
Project Size: 770 SF

This 770-square-foot accessory dwelling unit is designed as a contemporary extension of the primary residence, connected by a covered walkway while maintaining its own identity and sense of privacy. The exterior combines corten steel with materials that complement the existing home, creating a cohesive yet distinct architectural expression.

The open kitchen and dining area anchor the ADU, lifting into a lofted living space defined by warm wood finishes, built-in shelving, and abundant natural light. Large windows throughout the structure frame views to the landscape and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor living.

Private spaces are organized around a series of outdoor rooms. The bedroom overlooks a secluded rear yard, while a courtyard shared with the bathroom introduces daylight and curated views deep into the interior. A new perimeter fence defines the ADU's private outdoor space, creating a compact retreat that feels connected to nature.
