Los Angeles, California (2008) (unbuilt project)
Music Conservatory utilizes a formal “floating bar” typology to establish it’s presence on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. The proposal seeks to create a “campus” of sorts by linking two existing buildings and leveraging constructed grounds above roofs when possible. By placing the programmatic “meat” of practice rooms and instruction facilities in the lifted volume, the action of the building is presented to the public street. The project’s skin is composed of both inert and active layers playing with transparency and translucency while using screening as an opportunity for subtle sculptural form and functional shade structures.
