Project Size: 24 SF
Taper attempts to slow the human body in motion as it circulates vertically through domestic space. Using subtle variation in geometry, smoothness and integrated knick-knack shelving, Taper combines functional fall protection with speed adjusting variations. The stair’s intricate detailing contains slight reveals and adjustments, which are intended to pause the passerby to take a closer look. The guardrail’s tapering form engulfs the stair into a gentle, smooth object that one wants to touch while walking by. Light and sound pass through the protective balustrade, while the form and views change depending upon viewpoint in the basement.
